Awakening the Inner Eye
Intuition in Education
by
Nell Noddings
&
Paul J. Shore
"As authors we hope that some of the
exhilaration and excitement we experienced in researching and writing is caught
by the reader. . . we hope this book will be the beginning of a serious dialogue
on the meaning, importance, and uses of intuition, a dialogue involving not only
scholars and scientists, but teachers, artists, and others who encounter
intuitive processes in their daily lives. Such
a conversation is, we believe, essential if intuition is to take its place among
other valuable educational concepts."
from the Introduction by Nel Noddings & Paul J. Shore
In this classic text, Noddings and Shore give readers
a conceptual history of intuition, examining intuition in religion, art,
psychology, and philosophy. In
addition, they search for definitions of intuition and analyze its connection to
other related terms, including receptivity, consciousness, and will. Awakening
the Inner Eye discusses the establishment, maintenance, and enhancement
of intuitive modes, and how these efforts are related to both cognitive and
affective education. The authors
are particularly interested in intuition within the domain of the
teacher-student relationship and how teaching may enhance both moral and
intellectual sensitivity in students.
